I bought my first Dalmatian from a local breeder in March of 1987. I took this very handsome 9 week old puppy home and named him Gentlemen Jim of Hill-N-Dal. As a novice owner/handler, I showed Jimmy for four years, but never got a point. But, I was hooked on the show scene and got a lot of experience.
I co-owned my second Dalmatian with Jimmy's breeder, Jan Hill. Ch Hill-N-Dal's M'Lady Mercedes turned out to be an exceptional Dalmatian. She finished her championship by going WB/BOW at the National in Lexington, Kentucky in 1993. The following year, she received an AOM at the National in San Rafael in California.
I studied pedigrees, and watched dogs for ten years before acquiring my next Dalmatian from Richard Millaire. Tessa, Alfredrich Pocahontas, (littermate sister to the Top 20 Dalmatian, Am/Can/Int/Mex Ch Alfredrich Light After Dark) turned out to be the most wonderful bitch. She has a great temperament, is extremely smart, very healthy, and is very photogenic!
It was a very big decision to breed her. I had never bred a litter, (plus I had heard countless horror stories of everything that could go wrong). It took me two years to find the right stud dog. I chose Cupid, Ch Givens Dalmino JLS Igdaliah CGC. The reason I chose Cupid, was his stable temperament, his movement, and his "everybody's my friend" attitude. Not only did Cupid sire some wonderful pups, but he also introduced me to some wonderful new friends: Julia Soukup and Doug & Marcia Givens. It would have been a lot harder to whelp and raise my pups without their guidance and encouragement.
Tessa whelped 5 pups on March 2, 2000. All black spotted, 3 boys (1 patch) and 2 girls. I kept one boy, Int CH DJ's Orion The Hunter, and one girl, Am/Int CH DJ's Cupid's Comet. They are turning out to be exactly what I was trying to achieve in my fledgling breeding program.
